The Village of Pinehurst was founded in the late 1890's as a winter resort for "Snowbirds". Located just 60 miles South of Raleigh, and 75 miles East of Charlotte, approximately 12,000 residents currently call Pinehurst, home. During the years of 1990 thru 2000, Pinehurst saw over a 90% increase in its population. The state of North Carolina during this time saw an increase of 21% and Moore County, the county which Pinehurst is located, saw an increase of 27%.
For almost a decade, Pinehurst has been considered the "Home of American Golf". Pinehurst Country Club has hosted numerous events, including the Ryder Cup, PGA Championship, the 1999 and 2005 U.S. Opens, and most recently, the 2008 U.S. Amateur. The U.S. Open will make a return trip to Pinehurst for the third time in 2014.
There is certainly an abundance of other activities and wonderful distractions if golf is not for you. There are world class tennis facilities and championship croquet and lawn bowling courts. The Harness Track which hosts many equestrian activities ranging from jump shows and dressage. When you want to slow down the pace of the day, Pinehurst offers many unique shops and boutiques. Voted best bar in Moore County in 2006 and 2007. If you are looking for an evening of fine dining, look no further than Elliot's on Linden.
