| The town of Southern Pines was incorporated in 1887 and was founded with the intent of drawing newcomers into this wonderful area. With northern travelers headed south by train for warmer weather, Southern Pines welcomed them with open arms. Today, Southern Pines has a population of approximately 12,000 people. Downtown boasts a large selection of boutiques, specialty stores, and dining for everyone. There is a very large equestrian community which draws horse lovers from around the world.
Southern Pines embraces fitness and recreation, with half dozen parks and athletic complexes. There is also the 900 acre Weymouth Woods natural preserve, which also has the Weymouth Center for the Performing Arts & Humanities. In addition, the Weymouth Center is also home to the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame. To add to its active community, each year the town hosts the 100 mile cycling competition Tour de Moore, as well as several street festivals throughout the year.
With the rich golf tradition that Moore County offers, Southern Pines also features first class golf facilities. One example is Pine Needles Golf Club, which has hosted three U.S. Women's Open's.
Adjacent to Southern Pines, is Fort Bragg. Being an area of great quality of life as well as being in close proximity to the base, Southern Pines is highly desirable for military personnel and civilian contractors who commute to and from the base.
